Eyesight is something that people often take for granted. For a select few, there is the unfortunate circumstance of losing an eye, or a decrease in eyesight due to accident or disease. It is important to take the necessary care and preventative measure to ensure you or the ones you love never have to suffer this unfortunate experience.

Thankfully there are eye specialists and optometrists in every city that are capable of diagnosing and correcting all forms of eye problems. Eye exams are the leading factor in detecting and preventing eye disease such as glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease. But the most common practice by professionals is quantifying sight quality. Near-sighted, far-sighted, and astigmatism are all forms of eye performance decline that can be corrected using corrective lenses in the form of glasses, or contact lenses.

Near-Sighted – medically known as ‘myopia,' this is caused when the light entering the eye does not focus directly on the retina but before it. Sight of distant objects will be blurry, and short objects will be in focus.

Far-Sighted – medically known as ‘hyperopia or hypermetropia.' This occurs when the eye is too short and not at the ideal rounded shape for light entering the eye and focusing on the retina precisely. The object is focused beyond retina and is therefore blurry as a result. In more advanced cases the problem can escalate to be at all depths requiring corrective lenses at all times.

Astigmatism – this is an optimal defect in which vision is blurred due to perpendicular horizontal light rays which meet the optical lens at two different points and angles throwing off the focus point in the eye on the retina. Instead of the image being focused in-front or behind the retina, it is focused off center of it. This is normally due to a slightly misshaping of the eye itself.

There are several types of eyewear to choose from depending on the individual situation. There are bifocal, trifocal, progressive, and contact lenses.

Bifocal/Trifocal Lenses – These type of glasses have a two or three horizontal viewing areas within the small area used for multiple corrective therapies. There is a distinct line visible on the eyewear, indicating the different surfaces.

Progressive Lenses – These lenses are usually in bifocal format but have the line smoothed out to be invisible allowing for a natural transition between the two surfaces and not making it so obvious.

Contact Lenses – These lenses are applied directly to the eye's surface. They can take some time to get used to and may irritate the eye at first. They are the most natural looking way to correct vision problems as they are virtually invisible to the onlooker. It is also possible to get colored lenses that can change the eye color of the individual.

Eye exams are recommended to be performed at least once a year. If the result is a required corrective measure, there is usually lots of help around for deciding on a style and frame in the doctor's office. There are thousands of different designs to choose from and therefore something for everyone.
